Jewellery Care

Caring for your jewellery

If sterling silver jewellery is left open to the air for a long time it will start to tarnish and turn black. The best place to store sterling silver jewellery is in an airtight bag, inside its own jewellery box. Store away from wood, coins, wool and rubber - these items can all speed up the tarnishing process of sterling jewellery. Ensure you clean jewellery before storing it away for a long period of time. This will remove any oils or dirt that has built up on the item.

The best way to clean silver jewellery is to rub gently with a soft cotton cloth or flannel to help remove tarnish. Clean jewellery regularly to help prevent tarnish and keep it scratch free. If you need to wash your sterling jewellery do so in mild soapy warm water (washing up liquid is fine). Rinse in warm water and dry thoroughly before storage.

Mooi also sells a handy silver jewellery polishing cloth.

Wearing regularly helps to prevent tarnishing of sterling silver jewellery. In addition, clean jewellery often, and avoid contact with makeup, perfume, hair spray and chlorine, as these substances can all damage sterling silver jewellery.

To keep your jewellery clean and shiny keep it dry when wearing and store it in the box provided. If left unpolished silver will tarnish but this can be kept at bay by a regular quick rub with a silver polishing cloth. These can be purchased for a nominal charge here.

We do not recommend the use of silver dips on our charms but they work well for cleaning silver chains.

Silver jewellery is by its nature precious and delicate - snagged chains and stretched links can sometimes occur. Should you accidentally break a chain or charm fitting don't worry as we can provide replacement chains and fittings at low cost. Please contact us and let us know what's gone wrong and we will let you know if we can help, the cost of the repair (if any) and whether you need to return the item to us. If you do need to send your jewellery to us please send by Royal Mail Special Delivery.

Please note we are unable to replace lost jewellery or jewellery which has broken due to misuse. To minimise the risk of loss or accidental breakage we advise you follow our care instructions and remove your jewellery when bathing, exercising, sleeping or carrying out heavy work. You should also check links and clasps regularly to ensure they remain sound. If you notice any stressing then stop wearing the item and arrange for its repair. Continuing to wear a damaged item may result in its loss at which point we will be unable to help. We make our jewellery as strong as it can be but silver is a relatively soft metal and it does require extra care.
