How do I care for Sterling silver (.925)?

If sterling silver jewellery is left open to the air for a long time it will start to tarnish and turn black. The best place to store sterling silver jewellery is in an airtight bag, inside a jewellery box. Store away from wood, coins, wool and rubber - these items can all speed up the tarnishing process of sterling jewellery. Ensure you clean jewellery before storing it away for a long period of time. This will remove any oils or dirt that has built up on the item.

The best way to clean silver jewellery is to rub gently with a soft cotton cloth or flannel to help remove tarnish. Clean jewellery regularly to help prevent tarnish and keep it scratch free. If you need to wash your sterling jewellery do so in mild soapy warm water (washing up liquid is fine). Rinse in warm water and dry thoroughly before storage.

Wearing regularly helps to prevent tarnishing of sterling silver jewellery. In addition, clean jewellery often, and avoid contact with makeup, perfume, hair spray and chlorine, as these substances can all damage sterling silver jewellery.

How do I care for 9ct Gold?

Proper storage is important for gold jewellery as it can scratch and dent, so it is important that you not jumble all of your jewellery together – instead each piece should be stored so it does not come in contact with another piece of jewellery. A fabric lined jewellery case or a box with compartments and dividers works well, but if you prefer to use an ordinary box, each piece should be kept in a soft cloth pouch or wrapped in a soft cloth.

The best way to clean gold jewellery yourself is to rub gently with a soft cotton cloth or flannel to help remove tarnish. Clean jewellery regularly to help prevent tarnish and keep it scratch free. If you need to wash your gold jewellery do so in mild soapy warm water (washing up liquid is fine) and a soft brush. Rinse in warm water and dry thoroughly before storage.

Do not let your jewellery come into contact with chemicals (household cleaners containing chlorine) as these will damage it over time.

How do I care for Fine Silver (.999 FS) jewellery?

Cleaning and caring for your Fingerprint silver jewellery is easy to do if you follow a few basic steps. With a little care and maintenance, your silver jewellery should always shine.

When you purchase silver jewellery, the first thing to remember is that silver is a relatively soft metal. Even the heaviest silver will bend if enough force is added to it. Silver is prone to scratching, try to minimize this by storing it correctly and treating it with care.

Your Fingerprints jewellery should never be stored with other metals or loose in a jewellery box.

Silver jewellery should always be cleaned with a soft cotton or flannel cloth. Synthetic materials can cause scratching.

For quick cleaning of silver, such as removing makeup or light dirt, use a small amount of liquid detergent or soap in warm water. Using your cloth, wipe the solution the jewellery, rinse under clean warm water, and dry thoroughly.

As your Fingerprint jewellery has been lightly antiqued we do not recommend using any liquid dip solutions that is available on the market.

What is the process for fingerprint jewellery?

Upon receipt of your order you will be sent an impressions kit. This kit contains a heat activated compound to take the impression (and may be remoulded again and again). Taking the prints is a very simple process which will take 5 minutes and you will be provided with step by step instructions. You will then return the impressions in the pre-paid envelope along with the order form.

Your unique piece of jewellery will then be created in the Mooi studio. Each piece is made by hand to the highest standard using a substance called (PMC) precious metal clay. PMC is made by combining pure silver particles with an organic binder. When your piece of jewellery is formed it is fired in a kiln which burns off the organic binder, leaving 99.9% fine silver. This is more pure than Sterling Silver (92.5%).

After firing, your jewellery is finished and polished by hand.

Once complete your unique piece of jewellery will be packaged in its own presentation box and sent by Recorded or Royal Mail Special Post. The whole process usually takes between 2-3 weeks, longer at busier periods and when hallmarking is required. (Note: The Hallmarking is required on silver items weighing 7.78 gram and over).

How old should my baby be to take a finger impression?

Finger impressions may be taken at any age, although babies up to the age of 12 months tend not to have developed a defined fingerprint. Without a defined fingerprint this would produce a 'dimple'.

Every baby is different and so I would recommend that you first look at the thumbs to see if there is a defined print. If not the footprint jewellery range are a beautiful alternative.

Is the impression kit safe?

Yes, it is made from non toxic materials and we have never experienced anyone having any issues with it, we have used it on our own family! We would however recommend that you wipe fingers after use. It must be your decision to use the impression kit and Mooi cannot accept liability for any problems encountered whilst using it. Please do not leave children alone which the kits as they may be a chocking hazard.

Is the hand / footprint kit safe?

Yes. It is not only safe, but also mess free and quick to use. It is actually the process that Maternity Wards in USA use for ID purposes.

You will receive an inkless wipe and a special piece of paper. The wipe is wiped over the area to be printed and then pressed against the paper for 5 seconds. The special paper then develops a print of the area.

Will the fingerprint be clear to see?

It does depend on the size of the child's finger and the depth of lines on their finger.  The shallower the lines the less defined they may be.  But even with few lines or undefined ones you still get a nice finger shaped imprint.  If we receive a print that has no lines, we will contact you before proceeding.

How do I add a hand-written or text message to the charm(s)?

Place your order for quantity, shape and message style. Messages should should be kept to a minimum; approx 20 characters (inc. spaces). This is only an estimated, as word sizes will also affect it. Please contact me first if you are unsure.

If you have selected a text message: You can add the message to the 'any comments' section when paying.

If you have selected a hand-written message: Once your order has been received you will be sent a pre-paid envelope in which to send me your hand-written message. Alternatively, you can send a copy of your handwritten message via an email photo attachment. Ideally the message should be written in thick black marker pen on white paper (no larger than A4 in size). Thicker lines are better because it will be reduced in size. Please try to ensure that there are no bends or creases in the paper as this could affect the finished piece.

When will I receive my personalised jewellery order?

Your piece(s) will usually be sent out by either Recorded or Royal Mail's Special Delivery service 10-15 days after the completed impressions and order form are returned to us. During busier times, if the item needs hallmarking or postal strikes this time may increase. If you have a special date that you need an item for, please let us know when you place your order.

Will my personalised jewellery piece scratch or dent?

Fine Silver , because of its purity, is a relatively soft metal. If an item is worn every day or hung on a chain with lots of other items or on a key ring, it will gradually age.

Top of page

Are the personalised charms sterling silver?

No, the personalised charms are fine silver which means they are more pure than sterling. Sterling silver contains a mixture of other metals and alloys which means it is 92.5% pure, while fine silver is 99.9% pure. All the items we attach to the charms such as chains, clasps, key fobs etc are sterling silver.

What is the process for 'Mini Masterpiece' and Handwritten Jewellery?

Once your order has been placed you may either post your artwork or handwritten message to: Mooi, 4 Tanbark, Houghton Le Spring, Tyne & Wear, DH4 7TE. or you may scan it and email to: mail@mooi.biz

Ideally the artwork should be in black and white and no larger than A4 in size, however I can work from coloured drawings but some of the detail could be lost. The simpler the artwork, the better the finished piece. Thicker lines are also better because it will be reduced in size. Please try to ensure that there are no bends or creases in the paper as this could affect the finished piece.

As soon as this is received, I will begin the process of transforming it into a piece of fine jewellery that you will be able to cherish and wear forever. Any artwork that requires editing (eg it was in colour ) I will email a proof for approval before continuing. The whole process takes about 2-3 weeks, longer at busier periods and when it requires hallmarking.

Yes. These will fit best on the medium and large size charms.

Can I personalised both sides of the charm?

The prints and artwork are set deep into the charms and so it would not be possible to do this both sides. However, I can scribe a name or initial on the back.
